Ahead of , the World Avocado Organisation rounds up some of the most unexpected facts about avocados — from sleep and potassium to pregnancy, eye health and the fruit’s surprising origin story.

You probably already know that avocados are rich in healthy fats and endlessly versatile in the kitchen. But did you know there is far more to this fruit than toast and guacamole? Ahead of World Avocado Day on 31 July, the World Avocado Organisation is shining a light on some of the lesser-known facts behind one of the world’s favourite fruits — from emerging research on sleep and pregnancy to eye health, potassium and even the origin of the word “avocado”. Here are some of the most surprising things you may not know about avocados:

1) Did you know eating avocado during pregnancy has been linked to a lower risk of food allergy in babies?

A recent study found that maternal avocado consumption during pregnancy was associated with 44% lower odds of infant food allergy at 12 months. Researchers believe this may be linked to avocado’s nutritional profile, which includes fibre, folate and unsaturated fats, nutrients that can help support both maternal nutrition and early immune development.

2) Did you know one avocado a day may help support better sleep?

In a recent study, adults who ate one avocado daily for six months reported better sleep quality than those who rarely consumed avocados. Avocados contain nutrients such as tryptophan, folate and magnesium, which are involved in processes linked to sleep, relaxation and nervous system function.

3) Did you know half an avocado contains more potassium than a medium banana?

One serving of avocado provides 487 mg of potassium, compared with 422 mg in a medium banana. Potassium plays a key role in muscle function, fluid balance, circulation and normal blood pressure. Adding avocados to your weekly fruit bowl is a great ally for active lifestyles.

4) Did you know avocados can also support eye health?

Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids associated with eye health and the protection of retinal tissue. This fruit’s natural fats also help the body absorb these compounds more effectively, making avocado a smart food for supporting vision as part of a balanced diet.

5) Did you know avocados are technically berries?

Botanically speaking, avocados are classified as berries, even though most people use them like a vegetable in salads, sandwiches and savoury dishes. They also grow on trees that can bear fruit for many decades, making them one of the more surprising fruits in the everyday kitchen.

6) Did you know the word “avocado” has ancient roots?

The name comes from the Nahuatl word ahuacatl, used by the Aztecs. It is one more reminder that the avocado is not a modern trend at all, but a fruit with a long cultural history stretching back centuries.

7) Did you know Hass is the avocado variety most widely recognised around the world?

Hass is the most well-known avocado variety and the one most commonly found in supermarkets thanks to its taste, texture, ripening behaviour and transport suitability. However, it is just one of more than 500 avocado varieties grown around the world. Many producing countries are renowned for their green-skinned varieties, whose skin remains green as they ripen. As consumers continue to discover the avocado’s versatility in both sweet and savoury dishes throughout the day, appreciation for the wide range of varieties continues to grow.

8) Did you know avocados offer much more than healthy fats?

They also provide fibre, folate, potassium, vitamin K, vitamin E and other essential nutrients, making them one of the most nutrient-dense fruits around. That combination helps explain why avocados continue to stand out not just for taste and texture, but for the broader nutritional value they bring to everyday meals.

9) Did you know avocados can also be part of a more sustainable diet?

With water usage comparable to other fruit crops, and the lowest pesticide exposure across fruit and veggies and with increasingly environmentally conscious farming practices, avocados can be a sustainable and nutritious choice for consumers. Across the industry, growers are continuing to invest in advanced farming technologies, ethical practices and more responsible production methods to reduce environmental impact. Avocados can offer a more balanced option for consumers looking to make informed choices for both their well-being and the planet.

As World Avocado Day approaches, the World Avocado Organisation is inviting consumers to look beyond the usual avocado clichés and discover a fruit that can be used in a variety of different dishes that will continue to surprise. From emerging health research to their nutritional value and long cultural history, avocados are proving there is far more to them than meets the eye.

The 48-year-old funeral director Robert Bush faces sentencing this week after admitting 67 offences, including 30 of preventing the lawful burial of a body.

Hull Crown Court has this week been hearing victims’ statements on the impact his crimes have had on their lives. Warning: distressing details.

The register provides families with a trusted database of approved professionals while bringing formal accountability to an otherwise unregulated sector.

FOA founders Sacha Mulligan and Michelle Harvey said they had been left deeply shocked by the case.

In a statement the FOA said: “Families place enormous trust in everyone involved in arranging and conducting a funeral. That trust must never be taken for granted. The distress caused by cases such as this reinforces why professional standards, safeguarding and accountability matter.

“It beggars belief that someone could have been so cruel and shown such utter disrespect and disregard to the men and women he’d been entrusted to care for.

“This appalling case only strengthens the resolve of the Funeral Officiant Authority to campaign for greater regulation in the sector. This is urgently needed.

“The FOA is committed to maintaining a recognised register of qualified funeral officiants who demonstrate integrity, professionalism and compassion. Through appropriate DBS safeguarding, ongoing training and adherence to our professional standards, we aim to provide reassurance that families are supported by officiants who understand the privilege and responsibility of their role.

“We remain determined to raise standards across the profession and ensure bereaved families can have confidence in those entrusted with leading one of life’s most important ceremonies.”

A men’s health charity has accused the Government of years of delay after the National Screening Committee decided in May against a nationwide prostate cancer screening programme.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in UK men, with around 63,000 cases and 13,000 deaths a year. Almost half of cases present with advanced, incurable disease. The UK ranks 23rd out of 31 European countries on prostate cancer mortality.

Prof Chris Booth, retired urologist and founder of men’s health charity Chaps, said “more men will die unnecessarily from the UK’s most common cancer” as a result of the decision, and urged incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham, a former

Health Secretary, to put screening reform at the top of his agenda.

The National Screening Committee has instead recommended screening only for men carrying BRCA gene variants, a group estimated at three in every 1,000 men. Everyone else remains outside any organised programme.

“This decision ignores the overwhelming majority of men at risk,” Prof Booth said. “With a national screening programme, as we have for other common cancers, thousands of lives could be saved through earlier diagnosis.”

The Government has continued to back the £60 million TRANSFORM trial, funded by £26 million from charities including Prostate Cancer UK and £34 million from the Government via the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) – of which £16 million was the NIHR’s initial commitment, later topped up with a further £18 million to widen the trial’s reach to Black men.

Prof Booth argued the trial format offers “no guarantees” of success or new answers, and accused successive governments of a “dithering approach” that risks delaying screening that could already be justified by existing international evidence.

“The European Union formally endorsed prostate cancer screening in 2022, and several European countries are now implementing national screening programmes based on modern, risk-stratified approaches,” he said. “Yet despite mounting international evidence, the Government has ignored the overwhelming majority of men at risk in favour of one trial. Every year of delay means more men are diagnosed too late for curative treatment.”

Prostate cancer remains the only major cancer in the UK without a national screening programme.

British families are becoming increasingly cost-conscious when planning summer activities, with more than four in ten (43%) actively seeking discounts and deals on attractions and experiences compared to a year ago.

New research from Boundless found value for money is now the nation’s leading consideration when choosing a day out, with 41% ranking it as their most important factor.

The study found more than a third of adults (35%) are planning more day trips than last year, with seven in ten (69%) expecting to take at least as many UK days out as they did in summer 2025 – highlighting the enduring appeal of British summer experiences, despite ongoing financial pressures.

The appeal of staying closer to home is also growing, with almost one in five (18%) saying the rising cost of overseas holidays is making UK days out more attractive this summer.

Affordability remains a priority more broadly, with 40% citing cost as a key factor when choosing a day out. The research found the hunt for value is intensifying, with more than four in ten (43%) saying they are actively looking for discounts and deals on attractions and experiences more than they were a year ago.

British families are set for a busy summer, with six in ten (60%) expecting to take three or more UK day trips over the summer holidays.

Darren Milton at Boundless, the membership club for public sector and civil service workers and retirees, said: “Families are clearly looking for ways to make their cash go further this summer, with value for money now the top consideration when choosing a day out and more people actively searching for discounts than a year ago.

“What’s encouraging is that people aren’t cutting back on experiences altogether. Instead, they’re looking for smarter ways to enjoy quality time together, whether that’s visiting destinations closer to home or making the most of offers and membership benefits.

“At Boundless, we want to help families enjoy more of what they love by making memorable days out more accessible and affordable.”

Personal finance expert Lynn Beattie, known as Mrs Mummypenny, said: “Families want to make summer memories, but the cost of living is squeezing household budgets tighter than ever.

“Even a simple day out can spiral once you add travel, food, parking and entrance fees, so parents are being far more selective about where and how they spend.”

According to the study, the top summer experiences remain firmly rooted in classic British traditions.

Nearly half of respondents (46%) said beaches were among the destinations they were most likely to visit this summer, ahead of countryside attractions (26%), museums (22%), heritage sites (20%) and wildlife attractions (20%).

When asked what best represents the perfect British summer, going to the beach came top (29%), followed by eating fish and chips by the sea (26%), visiting a seaside town (23%) and having an ice cream on the beach (19%).

The research also revealed the UK’s most desired summer destinations: Cornwall and the Lake District jointly topped the list, with one in 10 respondents voting for them (11%).

Across the UK, more than 633,000 people are living with Epilepsy, with almost 29,000 new diagnoses every year. Yet, despite affecting around one in every 100 people, many still think Epilepsy is simply about having a seizure.

To mark World Brain Day on July 22nd, Dr Abteen Mostofi, Neurosurgeon at St George’s Hospital in London, is encouraging people to understand better what Epilepsy really is – a neurological condition caused by disrupted electrical activity in the brain.

“Many people think Epilepsy begins and ends with a seizure, but that’s only part of the story. Every seizure starts in the brain when normal electrical signals become disrupted. Depending on which part of the brain is affected, Epilepsy can temporarily interfere with memory, speech, movement, emotions, awareness or concentration.

That’s why Epilepsy is such a personal condition. Two people can have Epilepsy but experience it in completely different ways because different areas of the brain are involved.”

While around seven in ten people achieve good seizure control with medication, around one in three continue to experience uncontrolled seizures or medication side effects that affect quality of life.

Dr Mostofi says treatment is about much more than medication alone. “Taking medication correctly remains the cornerstone of epilepsy treatment, but protecting your brain through good sleep, recognising personal triggers, managing stress and seeking specialist advice if seizures continue can make a significant difference. The earlier we intervene when treatment isn’t working, the more treatment options may be available.”

Dr Mostofi suggested these top five ways people with Epilepsy can help reduce seizure risk –

Take antiseizure medication exactly as prescribed. NHS guidance says not to miss doses or change epilepsy treatment without medical advice, and NICE identifies non-adherence to medication as a modifiable risk factor for epilepsy-related death and SUDEP.

Protect sleep and manage stress. NHS and charity guidance both list tiredness and stress as common seizure triggers, and Epilepsy Action advises people to establish a good sleep routine and reduce stress where possible.

Track personal triggers and be careful with alcohol. NHS advice recommends keeping a seizure diary to help identify triggers such as tiredness, stress, periods, flashing lights, and food or drink. It also says not to drink too much alcohol, because alcohol can raise seizure risk and also contribute to missed medication and poor sleep.

Use screen and light precautions only if photosensitivity is part of the picture. Only around 3% to 5% of people with Epilepsy have photosensitive Epilepsy, so “reduce screen time” is not a universal rule for everyone with Epilepsy. For people who are photosensitive, Epilepsy Action and Epilepsy Society advise practical steps such as avoiding flashing or flickering content, using a high-refresh-rate flat-screen, considering a smaller screen, and using filters or glare reduction.

If seizures continue after treatment attempts, ask early about specialist options rather than just “putting up with it.” NICE says people whose seizures are drug-resistant or whose side effects are intolerable should be referred for assessment to a tertiary epilepsy service within four weeks. Specialist treatment options may include ketogenic diet, resective epilepsy surgery, or neurostimulation like EASEE device if resective surgery is not an option”

Speak to your health professional about accessing the latest innovative med-tech available on the NHS, including Precisis’ EASEE device.

Using repetition and alliteration throughout the story, the book keeps children entertained while also supporting key areas of early learning and language development. The engaging format encourages participation, concentration and curiosity — helping young readers learn naturally through play and storytelling whilst the beautiful illustrations from Rosa Kusabbi mesmerise young minds.

Denise, who has worked with young children and families for over 25 years, said: “The book is designed to develop learning in a fun, sensory way — featuring language, shapes, sizes, distance, numbers and time. The feedback from parents so far has been amazing and thanks to Arts Council funding I’ve been able to bring it to life with a professional actor. These live storytelling sessions have been incredible and the children have loved them.”

What makes ReNEW truly stand apart is the deeply personal story behind it. Dr. Kate Blundell has been privately navigating a long and traumatic battle with endometriosis — a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body, often causing debilitating pain, inflammation and fatigue.

Dr. Kate explains: “It took me almost 20 years to receive a diagnosis of stage four endometriosis, by which point the disease had spread to my bladder and bowel. Like so many women, I spent years being told my symptoms were “normal” or something I simply had to tolerate. I experienced pain so severe it caused me to lose consciousness and extreme bleeding episodes disrupted both my personal and professional life.”

She continues: “One particularly traumatic moment remains vivid in my memory. While out with friends, the bleeding became so severe they feared I had miscarried. I was eventually sent home in a taxi sitting on a plastic bag. The condition also caused significant anaemia, leading to profound exhaustion and chronic fatigue — symptoms that were invisible to others but dramatically affected my daily life.”

CLICK HERE TO EXPLORE THE RANGE ONLINE

Alongside the physical impact came the emotional toll. Chronic pain, hormonal disruption, uncertainty and fertility concerns contributed to anxiety, emotional exhaustion and periods of low mood. Yet throughout all of this, Dr. Kate continued to build businesses, teach, care for patients and show up for others — often silently managing what was happening behind the scenes.

Dr. Kate explains: “Rather than relying on a single treatment approach, I began focusing on supporting my body more holistically. My recovery and management strategy has included addressing chronic inflammation, improving cellular repair and energy production, rebuilding iron levels after anaemia, and supporting the body with targeted supplementation.”

She continues: “Among the supplements that have helped is N-acetylcysteine (NAC), which emerging research suggests may support inflammatory pathways linked to endometriosis. I also incorporated collagen support to help tissue repair, skin health and overall structural integrity. Equally important was changing my mindset — learning to rest, setting healthier boundaries and moving away from constant overwork.”

CLICK HERE TO EXPLORE THE RANGE ONLINE

This philosophy now sits at the heart of ReNEW. Rather than focusing purely on aesthetics or quick-fix beauty trends, the brand is built around supporting skin health through science, repair and resilience. The formulations are grounded in skin biology, inflammation management and cellular restoration, with a strong understanding of how chronic inflammation can manifest externally through conditions such as acne, rosacea and premature ageing.

Whilst every product within the ReNEW collection has been carefully selected to support skin health, four products have emerged as clear favourites amongst their clients: Prepare Cleanser, Protect 50 SPF (with Mineral Tint), Super B Serum and Retinova Barrier-Boosting Night Recovery. Together, these products create a simple yet highly effective skincare routine that focuses on protection, repair and regeneration.

ReNEW also reflects a growing shift towards preventative, restorative wellbeing — recognising the powerful connection between internal health, confidence and skin condition. Importantly, every product is cruelty-free, ethically developed and designed without unnecessary ingredient overload. For Dr. Kate, skincare is not about vanity — it is about helping people feel more like themselves again.

Designed to spark creativity and build confidence, Story Wizard transforms a child’s imagination into something they can hold in their hands forever. Young writers begin by creating their own characters, deciding what they look like, who they are and the role they’ll play in the story. They then develop the plot, choosing everything from the setting and adventure to the challenges their characters will face.

The story is carefully written and illustrated based on the child’s ideas before being transformed into a beautifully printed paperback or hardback book, with the child’s name proudly displayed on the cover as the author. Every young writer also receives a personalised certificate recognising them as a published author, making the experience one they’ll treasure for years to come.

In an age where screens dominate much of children’s free time, Story Wizard encourages youngsters to embrace creativity, storytelling and literacy in an engaging and rewarding way. Rather than simply reading stories, children become the creators, learning that their ideas have real value and deserve to be shared.

What makes the concept particularly special is that every book is completely unique. Whether a child dreams of writing about dragons, pirates, superheroes, magical forests, family members or family pets, their imagination is at the heart of every page. It’s about inspiring confidence, encouraging creative thinking and showing children that they really can achieve something extraordinary.

Story Wizard is suitable for young authors aged 7-14, with families able to choose from different book lengths and genres. Every order includes free UK delivery, with each personalised book printed to order and delivered directly to the family’s home.
Harper said: “I loved creating stories so asked my Dad if I could become an author. He is good with technology so we created a book together. I have now published 10 books. One is called The Secret Guardian Of Dibbinsdale and it’s about my cat Lola protecting other animals. Another is called Buzzlebee Bob about a giant bee and one is about a four eyed blue fluffy monster and a shark.”

Harper’s Dad, Martin, said: “Harper is always full of stories and ideas. She wanted to turn them into books and become and author, but we didn’t know where to start. I’m quite tech-savvy so looked into created a system that would help her turn her ideas into reality and write a book for her — published in her name. She absolutely loves creating the books so we’ve decided to roll it out as a business.”

For the past decade, PAFA (Parenting Assessments For All) has been transforming lives across the UK from its Wirral base, providing one of the most important yet least understood services in child safeguarding.

This year marks a major milestone as the organisation celebrates 10 years of supporting vulnerable families. The landmark anniversary was recently celebrated alongside colleagues, partners and supporters, with The Mayor of Wirral attending the special event to recognise the organisation’s remarkable contribution to safeguarding children and strengthening families.

PAFA delivers an essential service for families when Local Authorities have significant concerns about a parent’s ability to provide safe care for their child. Through its specialist residential assessment model (MALD – Making Assessments Accessible For Those With Learning Disabilities And Other Additional Needs), PAFA supports families, helping to bridge the gap between immediate intervention and establishing the best way forward for the parent and child.

Parents and their children live together in PAFA’s dedicated residential home, where they are supported within a warm, nurturing environment. Experienced staff provide round-the-clock supervision, guidance, using a holistic approach that considers the individual needs, strengths, and wellbeing of both the parent and child. The aim is to give parents every possible opportunity to grow in confidence, develop their parenting skills, and demonstrate their ability to provide a safe, stable, and loving home, while ensuring each child’s welfare remains at the heart of everything they do.

Through dedication to fair, robust, and evidence-based assessments with MALD, PAFA has earned an outstanding reputation within the sector. Since opening its doors in 2015, the organisation has grown with care, purpose, and professionalism, becoming one of the country’s leading providers of residential parenting assessments.

Director Barbara Liversage said: “After losing my sister in 2009, I felt a deep personal commitment to helping parents who were facing some of life’s most difficult challenges, including substance misuse, poor mental health, and domestic abuse. I recognised that there needed to be more services offering parents genuine support, understanding, and the opportunity to remain with their children where it was safe.”

She continued: “With my background in social care, child protection, I set out to create PAFA with a clear vision: to give parents every opportunity to grow, to be supported, and to build safer, more stable lives with their children. Seeing that vision become a reality has been one of my proudest achievements. Over the last decade, PAFA has supported parents and children with compassion, dedication, and hope — and I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished.”

PAFA’s team consists of more than 20 highly experienced staff and professionals, including specialists in neurodiversity. Since opening its doors in 2015, PAFA have supported more than 100 families during some of their most challenging times.

Through encouragement, practical guidance, and a holistic approach tailored to each family’s individual needs, has helped parents develop the skills, routines, and resilience needed to create safer and more stable home environments. At the heart of PAFA’s work is a commitment to giving families hope, support, and every possible opportunity to move forward.

One parent recently said: “All the PAFA staff were friendly and supportive, and they became like family for a short while. Whilst at PAFA, my partner and I faced some difficulties. My nan passed away and my partner’s mum found out she had terminal cancer. The staff were amazing and helped and supported us through the toughest time of our lives, and I will forever be grateful for my time spent at PAFA.”

They continued: “PAFA gave my partner and me a chance to prove ourselves as parents, and we also learned a lot along the way. I will forever have a special place in my heart for everyone at PAFA, and I will always tell my daughter about when she was born and where she lived. If we could have stayed forever, then we certainly would have.”

Their meticulous approach has resulted in what the organisation describes as a 100% success rate — not because every family stays together, but because every assessment delivers a clear, evidence-based outcome that prioritises the best interests of the child.

While statistics tell one story, it is the personal experiences that truly illustrate PAFA’s impact. Co-Director Elaine Karema explains: “Over the years, many former residents have remained in contact with us, sharing heartfelt messages explaining how the support they received during one of the most difficult periods of their lives ultimately kept their families together. This kind of feedback means the world to us and the work we do.”

For parents facing overwhelming challenges, PAFA offers so much more than a residential programme. It provides a calm, safe, and nurturing environment where families are met with compassion, patience, and understanding. Parents are given time, encouragement, and practical support to strengthen the bond with their children. Through a holistic approach, PAFA helps families feel supported as they work towards safer, more stable, and more hopeful futures together.

Based within its residential family centre in Wirral, PAFA gives parents and children the opportunity to remain together in a caring family environment while receiving guidance, education and day-to-day parenting help. Each family is supported with dignity and respect, recognising their individual needs, experiences, and strengths.
As safeguarding professionals increasingly work with families facing complex and multifaceted needs, organisations such as PAFA have become more vital than ever. Their work not only protects vulnerable children but also gives parents a genuine opportunity to make lasting positive changes, ensuring that every decision is based on careful assessment rather than assumption.

Barbara summarises: “The past ten years have involved a great deal of hard work, but it has always been deeply meaningful and vital work. At PAFA, we are incredibly proud to stand alongside families during some of the most difficult and painful times in their lives, offering support, guidance, and hope when it is needed most.”

She continues: “Whilst PAFA’s work must be thorough and honest, it is always carried out with compassion, care, and the child’s welfare at the heart of everything they do. Over the past decade, PAFA has grown into a respected and trusted service, and they take great pride in professionalism, integrity, and unwavering commitment to helping families move towards safer, stronger, and more positive futures.”
