BRITS BACK THEMSELVES – EVEN IF THEY CAN’T FIND THEIR TRAINERS

Ahead of the 43rd London Marathon, research from Paddy Power Bingo reveals the nation is overflowing with confidence – just not necessarily ability.

Over four million Brits (6%) believe they could beat the world marathon record – clocking 26.2 miles in under two hours. And not after months of prep and protein shakes – they reckon they could do it with zero training.

CAN’T RUN? BECOME THE PM INSTEAD

Of course, running 26.2 miles may not be your thing. No problem. According to the research:

4.8 million Brits (7%) think it’d be easier to become Prime Minister than run a marathon

2.7 million would rather walk the entire length of England (that’s 556 miles, by the way)

And over a million believe an Ironman triathlon – which includes a marathon after a 112-mile cycle and 2.4-mile swim – would be an easier option.

MARATHON ROUTE? APPARENTLY JUST A MYSTERY TOUR

When asked which iconic locations you pass on the London Marathon, 11% of Brits said… none. As in, zero London landmarks. No Big Ben, no Tower Bridge, no Buckingham Palace – just a long, anonymous run through who-knows-where.

And some clearly think the event is less capital city, more UK sightseeing tour:

12% think it passes Wembley Stadium

2% say the Angel of the North (which is 272 miles away)

1% expect to get a scenic view of the White Cliffs of Dover on their way to the finish line

TOP FIVE MARATHON MISHAPS: MOST INCORRECT LOCATIONS

Rank

Landmark

Distance from London

% of Brits

1

Windsor Castle

5

Hadrian’s Wall

300 miles

1%

DISTANCE? ANYONE’S GUESS

Despite being one of the world’s most iconic races, 43% of Brits don’t actually know how far a marathon is.

Only 56% correctly said 26.2 miles

53% of women got it wrong compared to 35% of men

And for those identifying as “Other”, a staggering 71% had no idea

THE MARATHON ‘ICK’ IS REAL

While many Brits cheer on the runners with pride, not everyone’s feeling the love.

10% dislike seeing fully grown adults in fancy dress

8% moan about the traffic

3% say marathon runners give them the ick

2% admit they hate pretending to care by clapping for hours on the sidelines

LIE TO ME, MARATHON EDITION

Turns out over five million Brits (7%) have straight-up lied about completing a marathon. Top reasons?

“It’s easier than admitting I haven’t” – 46%

“I thought I’d be judged” – 32%

“I exaggerated a half marathon” – 22%

And yes, 7% did it to “impress someone they fancy”

LONDONERS LEAD THE PACK… IN FALSE BELIEF

Leading the charge in overconfidence are Londoners, with a full 10% believing they could leg it around the capital’s 26.2-mile route in under two hours without any training and still be home in time for Sunday roast.

Not far behind are the proud people of Manchester, Belfast and Birmingham, with 9% of locals in each city backing themselves to break records, Eliud Kipchoge-style.

WHAT PADDY POWER BINGO HAS TO SAY

On behalf of Paddy Power Bingo, Paddy Power said: “Only in Britain could millions of people believe they can run faster than the actual world record holder – without so much as a warm-up.

“We salute the confidence. But let’s be honest – most would be out of breath halfway through tying their laces.

“That’s why at Paddy Power Bingo, we reward stamina of a different kind – like lasting a full game without needing a nap.”

The UEFA Champions League knockout stage kicked off with high drama on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, as four exciting first-leg matches set the stage for what promises to be a thrilling round of 16. Teams from across Europe battled it out, with several matches featuring late twists and dramatic goals. Let’s dive into the highlights of an unforgettable night in European football.

Manchester City 2-3 Real Madrid: A Stunner at the Etihad

The clash between Manchester City and Real Madrid was nothing short of spectacular. The Etihad Stadium witnessed a thrilling contest, with both teams going all out to claim an advantage in the first leg. It was a night that lived up to its billing as two of Europe’s biggest clubs went head-to-head in a rollercoaster affair.

The match began with early fireworks as Manchester City’s Erling Haaland gave the hosts the lead, opening the scoring with a clinical finish. However, Real Madrid were quick to respond, and their star player, Kylian Mbappé, found the back of the net to level the score. City regained the upper hand after Haaland converted a penalty, putting them 2-1 ahead. But just when it looked like City would take control, Real Madrid struck back. Brahim Díaz scored a stunning equalizer, making it 2-2, and it seemed like the match would end in a draw.

However, in the dying moments of the game, Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior capitalized on a defensive mistake and provided the assist for Jude Bellingham, who slotted the ball into the net, securing a crucial 3-2 victory for the Spanish giants. The win gives Madrid the upper hand going into the second leg, but with two of the competition’s most potent attacking sides involved, the return fixture promises to be a nail-biting encounter.

Juventus 2-1 PSV Eindhoven: Late Drama in Turin

At the Allianz Stadium in Turin, Juventus faced PSV Eindhoven in another closely contested affair. Both teams came into the game with high hopes of taking an advantage into the second leg, and Juventus managed to edge out their Dutch opponents with a 2-1 win.

The match began with intensity, and Juventus struck first through Weston McKennie, who found the back of the net to put the hosts in the lead. PSV Eindhoven, however, didn’t take long to respond. Ivan Perišić leveled the match with a superb goal, bringing the visitors back into contention.

Just as it seemed like the match might end in a draw, Juventus found a late winner. Samuel Mbangula scored a crucial goal in the 82nd minute, putting Juventus ahead once again. The 2-1 scoreline gives the Italian side a slight advantage, but the tie remains finely balanced heading into the return leg in Eindhoven. The final result left both teams with much to play for, and Juventus will need to be wary of PSV’s attacking threats as they head into the second leg.

Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Sporting CP: Dominant Dortmund Strike Early

Borussia Dortmund produced one of the most convincing performances of the night, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Sporting CP in Lisbon. From the first whistle, Dortmund were in control of the game, dictating the tempo and demonstrating their attacking prowess.

Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring for Dortmund, and the visitors continued to pile on the pressure. Pascal Groß doubled the lead, and Sporting CP struggled to find any rhythm throughout the match. In the second half, Dortmund put the game to bed when Karim Adeyemi netted a third, giving Dortmund a commanding 3-0 lead to take into the second leg.

With a three-goal advantage, Dortmund are in a commanding position to progress to the quarter-finals. Sporting CP will have a monumental task ahead of them in the second leg, needing at least three goals to force extra time. Dortmund’s clinical performance has put them firmly in control of the tie, and they’ll look to finish the job in front of their home fans in the return fixture.

Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 Brest: PSG Dominate at Home

In the Champions League’s less dramatic encounter of the night, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Brest. The French champions were in full control throughout the match, with Kylian Mbappé playing a pivotal role in their attacking play.

PSG’s dominance was evident from the outset, as they took the lead early in the first half. Brest struggled to contain the attacking threat posed by Neymar, Messi, and Mbappé, who all played a role in PSG’s offensive onslaught. The second half saw PSG add two more goals to complete a comprehensive 3-0 victory, giving them a commanding first-leg lead.

The win puts PSG in an ideal position as they look to secure a spot in the quarter-finals. With the second leg to be played in Brest, PSG will be confident of maintaining their lead and progressing with ease. The return fixture could be a mere formality for the Parisians, but Brest will undoubtedly be hoping to pull off an upset in front of their home fans.

What’s Next?

The first leg of the Champions League round of 16 provided fans with a thrilling array of results, with plenty of drama, late goals, and commanding performances. Real Madrid’s victory over Manchester City gives them the upper hand, but City will be hoping to turn things around in the second leg. Juventus’ narrow win over PSV means that the tie is still wide open, while Dortmund’s dominant 3-0 victory puts them in an excellent position to advance. PSG, on the other hand, look poised to move on after their comfortable win against Brest.

With the second-leg fixtures to come, there is still plenty of football left to be played in this knockout round. The excitement is only just beginning, and fans around the world will be eagerly awaiting the next chapter of this thrilling European competition.

As the Champions League continues to unfold, all eyes will be on these teams as they aim to secure their place in the quarter-finals and continue their quest for European glory.

For decades, the meeting between Manchester United and Newcastle United was largely viewed as a David vs. Goliath clash—Newcastle were a proud and historic club but rarely carried the sustained firepower to consistently challenge the Red Devils. However, that narrative has shifted in recent seasons. With new ownership, ambitious investments, and the energetic leadership of Eddie Howe, Newcastle have evolved into a formidable side capable of competing toe-to-toe with the Premier League’s elite. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s reconstruction under Erik ten Hag aims to restore the club to the heights once taken for granted at Old Trafford.

A Storied History

Historically, Manchester United have enjoyed significant success in this fixture. The Sir Alex Ferguson era was particularly one-sided, with star-studded squads dominating most contests. Even amid the Magpies’ best attempts in the 1990s—which included an intense rivalry at the top of the table—United often found a way to come out on top. Over the years, the Red Devils have racked up victories both at Old Trafford and at St. James’ Park.

That said, the modern Premier League is more competitive than ever, and recent encounters reflect a changing dynamic. Last season saw Newcastle battle hard at Old Trafford for a 0–0 draw, while they scored a statement 2–0 win in the reverse fixture at St. James’ Park. On the cup front, they clashed in the 2023 Carabao Cup final, with Manchester United lifting the trophy. But in a more recent Carabao Cup encounter, it was Newcastle who triumphed at Old Trafford.

Tactical Overviews

Manchester United
Under Erik ten Hag, Manchester United prioritize a possession-based approach, attempting to build from the back and employ high-pressing concepts. Ten Hag wants his side to dominate the ball and craft openings through patient buildup, with quick wingers like Marcus Rashford providing directness and pace. Bruno Fernandes remains the creative fulcrum, spraying passes, charging into the box to score or assist, and generally pulling the strings in the final third.

However, this style can be compromised if opponents successfully press and mark United’s midfielders. The Red Devils have, at times, shown vulnerability in transitions; with their fullbacks pushing high and center-backs spreading wide, a well-orchestrated counter-attack can catch them out. Defensive injuries have also disrupted Ten Hag’s best-laid plans, so the manager often has to juggle his lineup to find defensive stability.

Newcastle United
Eddie Howe’s philosophy relies on high-intensity pressing and swift transitions. Newcastle quickly close down opponents in midfield, using a combination of physical strength and tactical discipline. Once they win the ball, they break forward at speed, often capitalizing on the pace of wide players like Miguel Almirón, Anthony Gordon, or Allan Saint-Maximin (if still on the roster). In the center, Bruno Guimarães serves as the creative heartbeat, capable of threading pinpoint through-balls or dribbling out of tight spaces.

With a robust defense and strong aerial presence, Newcastle excel on set pieces at both ends of the pitch. They also exhibit versatility in attack: Callum Wilson offers a physical, traditional striker’s presence, while Alexander Isak brings more mobility and flair. Howe’s willingness to alternate between the two forwards, or sometimes play them together, gives the Magpies multiple ways to threaten opposing back lines.

Where the Match Could Be Decided

The Midfield Battle
Bruno Fernandes vs. Bruno Guimarães has become a captivating subplot. Both midfielders are crucial to their teams’ attacking rhythm, serving as creative hubs and pressing triggers. Whichever “Bruno” gains the upper hand will go a long way in dictating how the match unfolds.

Managing Transitions
Manchester United’s quick wingers and Newcastle’s rapid counter-attacks guarantee an end-to-end game if defenses aren’t disciplined. Both sides must track back diligently; a momentary lapse can open a corridor for a breakaway goal.

Set Piece Mastery
Newcastle pride themselves on set-piece execution, and Manchester United have center-backs such as Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez who are strong in the air. A single corner or free kick can be decisive in a contest often decided by narrow margins.

What to Expect

Any clash between these two teams is now a genuine heavyweight encounter. Newcastle’s new-found confidence and quality have forced the rest of the league to take notice, while Manchester United remain a global powerhouse, eager to stake their claim to the Premier League’s top spots. Expect the game to be full of intensity, with a buzzing midfield battle and plenty of attacking forays from both sides.

While Manchester United might enjoy the historical edge and the boisterous support of Old Trafford, Newcastle have proven they can win on the biggest stages. Little details—like precise passing, finishing composure, and smart positional discipline—could determine the outcome of a match that promises to be as enthralling as it is unpredictable.

Ultimately, this fixture is no longer about one team trying to upset the established order—it’s about two genuine contenders vying for points that could shape their seasons. One thing is certain: Manchester United vs. Newcastle United is a modern Premier League classic in the making.

Both Premier League clubs encountered tenacious opponents from lower leagues, but late-game heroics and penalty drama ultimately saw them through to the next round.

Southampton Triumphs with Last-Minute Winner

Southampton hosted Stoke City in a game that showcased resilience from both teams. Southampton seemed to be cruising early on, with Taylor Harwood-Bellis giving them the lead in the 15th minute, heading in a well-placed corner to start the scoring. Shortly after, Adam Armstrong doubled Southampton’s advantage by converting a penalty, putting the Premier League side 2-0 up in the first half

.

However, Stoke City was not ready to bow out quietly. A goal from Ashley Phillips, on loan from Tottenham, breathed life into Stoke just before halftime, cutting Southampton’s lead to 2-1. Early in the second half, Thomas Cannon scored the equalizer, sending shockwaves through the Southampton supporters as Stoke began to look like they could pull off an upset. But as the clock neared full time, Southampton’s James Bree stepped up with a sensational goal from outside the box, sealing a 3-2 victory and sending the Saints through to the quarterfinals

.

Brentford Survives Sheffield Wednesday in a Nail-Biting Penalty Shootout

At Brentford, the Premier League team squared off against Sheffield Wednesday in a clash that also delivered high drama. Brentford took an early lead, courtesy of Kevin Schade, who tapped in a rebound after his initial shot was blocked. However, Sheffield Wednesday soon responded with a spectacular 35-yard strike from Djeidi Gassama, leveling the score 1-1

.

The match went into penalties, where both sides showcased remarkable composure. Each team converted their first four attempts, keeping the suspense alive until Brentford’s fifth shot sailed in. In a decisive moment, Brentford’s goalkeeper Mark Flekken made a crucial save against Liam Palmer’s penalty, securing Brentford’s place in the quarterfinals with a 5-4 shootout win

However, it’s inevitable that at some point Klopp will leave Liverpool, and the question then becomes: who should replace him to continue the success?

Replacing a manager of Klopp’s caliber is no easy task, but there are a few potential candidates who could be considered. One option is Julian Nagelsmann, the young and talented manager who has impressed with his tactical acumen and ability to develop young players at RB Leipzig. Nagelsmann’s progressive style of play and focus on attacking football would align well with Liverpool’s philosophy, and he could potentially take the team to new heights.

Another possible replacement is Brendan Rodgers, the former Liverpool manager who is currently enjoying success at Leicester City. Rodgers has proven himself to be a top-class manager, leading Leicester to an FA Cup victory and securing Champions League qualification. His experience with the club and familiarity with the players could make for a smooth transition if he were to return to Liverpool.

Finally, Pep Guardiola could be a dream replacement for Klopp. Guardiola has been immensely successful at Manchester City, winning multiple Premier League titles and playing some of the most breathtaking football in recent memory. His emphasis on possession-based football and high pressing would fit well with Liverpool’s style of play, and he has proven himself capable of handling the pressures of managing a top club.

Ultimately, the decision of who should replace Jurgen Klopp will fall to the owners and board of Liverpool FC. They will need to carefully consider the team’s long-term goals and the managerial qualities they value most. Whether they choose a young and promising manager like Nagelsmann, a familiar face like Rodgers, or a proven winner like Guardiola, the task of replacing Klopp will be a daunting one. But with the right choice, Liverpool can continue to thrive and compete at the highest level.

Who are Maidstone United?

Maidstone United is a professional football club based in Maidstone, Kent, England. The club was founded in 1992, but its origins date back to the late 19th century when Maidstone Invicta FC was established in 1880. Maidstone United currently competes in the National League South, which is the sixth tier of the English football league system.

After a period of success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which included progressing to the FA Cup third round and winning the Football Conference title in 1989, Maidstone United unfortunately faced financial difficulties. This led to the club being liquidated in 1992. However, the club was re-established a few years later in 1992 as Maidstone United FC.

Since its reformation, Maidstone United has experienced both highs and lows. The club initially competed in the Kent County Football League and gradually progressed through the non-league pyramid. The team achieved promotion to the National League South in 2015, which marked a significant milestone in the club’s recent history.

In recent years, Maidstone United has made significant improvements to its home ground, the Gallagher Stadium. The stadium, located in Maidstone town center, has a seating capacity of approximately 4,200. It features modern facilities and has become an iconic landmark for the club and its supporters.

Maidstone United is known for its strong fan base and has a loyal following. The club has a number of active supporters’ groups, including the Stones Independent Supporters Association (SISA) and the Maidstone United Supporters Club (MUSC). These groups play a vital role in promoting the club, organizing events, and creating a vibrant matchday atmosphere.

On the pitch, Maidstone United has had some notable achievements. In addition to winning the Football Conference title in 1989, the club has also achieved success in various cup competitions. Maidstone United reached the FA Cup third round in the 1990-1991 season, where they faced Coventry City, a top-flight team at the time. This was a significant feat for a non-league club and captured national attention.

Off the pitch, Maidstone United is also involved in the local community. The club runs various initiatives to engage with fans and promote grassroots football. Maidstone United’s Community Department organizes football coaching sessions, holiday camps, and educational programs to inspire young people and create a positive impact in the local area.

As Maidstone United continues to build on its rich history and develop as a club, its fans remain steadfast in their support. The club’s future aspirations include further promotion up the football league pyramid, with the ultimate goal of reaching the Football League. With dedicated fans, a committed management team, and a strong community presence, Maidstone United is a club that continues to make its mark in the world of football.
